Company Profile
PT Aneka Tambang Tbk, known as Antam, is a vertically integrated Indonesian mining and metals company with activities across exploration, mining, processing and marketing of nickel, gold, silver, bauxite and alumina. Headquartered in Jakarta, Antam operates major processing and smelting facilities and has pursued downstream integration to support Indonesia’s policy of domestic value addition. In recent years Antam has expanded nickel processing capacity with a new ferronickel plant program and is developing additional downstream projects in Eastern Indonesia as part of a broader strategy to serve battery and stainless-steel value chains.
Sustainability and Governance
Antam frames sustainability as central to its downstream strategy. The company publishes regular sustainability and community-investment reports that outline environmental management, reclamation, and social programs. Antam’s new ferronickel capacity and planned HPAL/RKEF downstream projects are being developed with attention to energy choices and local environmental management to meet ESG expectations for battery- and stainless-steel-related supply chains. Antam has been recognised for biodiversity and ESG initiatives and continues to integrate community engagement and regulatory compliance into project development.
Operations and Impacts in East Indonesia
Antam’s operational footprint in eastern Indonesia includes long-standing ferronickel operations in Pomalaa (Southeast Sulawesi) and new downstream processing capacity in East Halmahera (North Maluku). The East Halmahera ferronickel plant adds to Antam’s installed capacity and supports a strategy of processing ore domestically rather than exporting raw concentrates. This downstream expansion delivers several regional impacts: increased local employment during construction and operations, expanded supplier and contractor opportunities for local firms, and greater retention of value in the region through onshore processing. Antam’s involvement in smelter and alumina projects also aligns with national industrial policy to build domestic processing capability, which can increase regional investment in logistics, power and skills development.
Operationally, Antam collaborates with partners and joint ventures to execute large-scale processing projects and takes steps to integrate environmental management, reclamation, and community programs into its site planning. Continued development of downstream facilities in North Maluku and Sulawesi should expand Antam’s role as a regional industrial anchor while raising the importance of careful environmental stewardship and inclusive local procurement.
